Mercer Botanic Gardens

A visit to the Mercer Botanic Gardens in Humble, Texas, will provide you with a unique and inspiring experience. With over three hundred acres of riparian parkland, the Mercer Botanic Gardens is home to the largest collection of cultivated native plants in the world. Aside from offering visitors the opportunity to see and experience the diverse flora of Texas, the Mercer also actively promotes environmental conservation, sustainability, and the preservation of endangered exotic plant species.

The Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens are free to visit. The garden is located on Aldine Westfield Road, and is divided into two separate areas. On the west side of the road is the Mercer Arboretum, while on the east side is the Mercer Botanic Gardens. There are several different ecosystems to explore, including a cypress swamp and hickory bog. You'll find tropical and fern species, as well as a maple collection. There are also two barbecue pavilions and 58 picnic tables.

If you'd like to help out with the Mercer Botanic Gardens and its mission, consider joining its Friends. This nonprofit group was founded by local gardeners in the early 2000s. Since then, it has become known as the Mercer Society and helps the Mercer Botanic Gardens fulfill its mission. The Mercer Society is comprised of Mercer Volunteers, Mercer Members and the TMS Board. When visiting the Mercer Botanic Gardens, be sure to pack your camera! The grounds are beautifully landscaped and full of unique plants. The gardens are open from 8 AM to 8 PM from March to October and from November to February, excluding certain public holidays. Leashed dogs are allowed in the west side arboretum, but must be leashed in the east side. During warmer months, the garden is closed to pets.

The Mercers were concerned about losing their "paradise" to developers. They persuaded Harris County to purchase a 14.5-acre tract and agree to maintain it as a horticultural and educational facility. Mercer Botanic Gardens is undergoing a reconstruction process following the devastating floods of last May. The original visitor center and other buildings were destroyed. A visitor center is currently in the process of being rebuilt, and architectural plans are underway. The facility itself suffered only minor damage, while the nursery and greenhouse areas were completely destroyed. Heavy benches were tossed around, and plants were scattered across hundreds of yards.
